Steve R @ Frodsham

I've admired these lovely shots on the web before - I now see they're on show down the road from me in Runcorn. Itching to see them now!

Mark Huff @ Colchester

Stunning photos, guided to this site from the outdoorsmagic website. However i feel the website lets the project lets its down as when I click on the back to the map button the site crashes and I get the message "Operation aborted".
I am runninh windows XP and internet explorer.

Hi Mark - theres never been any issues before with XP users running IE. Glad you like the work. Henry

Roy Hammans @ Weeping Ash

Henry, Delighted to have discovered this project and your work. Pity I missed the exhibition but, thanks to an impending visit to Paul Hill's show this week I discovered your photographs by a devious route - which I've written about in a blog post at www.real-photographs.co.uk for what it's worth. (Well it's worth Googlejuice if nothing else!)
Have also purchased the book from the Wordsworth Museum - awaited eagerly.
Roy

tony d @ wrexham @ student

i've enjoyed the book and found it inspiring.

The images encapsulate beautifully both the romantic tradition in art while still containing an element of documentary.

Wonderful images!!

These are real works of art and are very inspiring.

Thanks to roeburndale at Alfaowner for directing me to this site

Incredible how much ambient light there is, and how little our eyes can pick up! Great shots Henry - I've always been hugely frustrated by high noise levels on long exposures at night. Maybe I need to upgrade my camera! Has the Nikon got a particularly large CCD, and did you use a huge tripod to keep things steady? I bet it's magical just being up there alone at night...

Reply:
Thanks Mat. The newest Nikon - the D3 has a larger sensor than the D2x I was using. Quality lenses make a huge difference as well. And yes a I carried a big solid tripod up the hills!!!

Josh Pearce @ Llanrhaeadr-Ym_mochnant, Wales

Just come back from a lake district, was totally blown away by you images, bought your book couldnt put it down in the car on the way back. You've inspired me to do a homage to your work for a college project, but around where I live. Thanks I was really struggling to find somthing to inspire me!!
Just a quick question did you use a low aperture e.g. f3.4?
and also any advice for me as I'm new to night time photography.

Thanks

Josh Pearce

All the shots were taken around a full moon which is surprisingly bright so f5 or 5.6 was generally fine. Henry

Paul @ Sunderland

I'm new to the photography of landscapes and new to walking them but I'm totally shocked how you managed dark shots without noise what camera and is it dark or is it light enough for the camera to produce no noise at night? your work is brill am looking to take some of my own I have the Nikon D70s my email is themuss25@aol.com all tips would be very helpful as an amature finding it hard to get good night shots thanks a lot Paul.

Reply:
All the shots were taken around the full moon usually with a clear sky - which gives out more light than you'd imagine. The camera was a Nikon D2X, with Nikon lenses and exposures were no more than two minutes, using the cameras 'noise reduction' mode. Henry

Hi Henry,

You may recall we met you early morning 3rd February 2007 on the High Street ridge and shared a bit of breakfast bar! Thought you looked like you needed it! I can now see some fantastic results from your dedicated work that night - the images are stunning and inspirational.

Keep up the great work and who knows we may cross paths again some early morning on the fells!

Thanks Tony, I remember - I was starving at the time! Henry

Peter Hardman @ Woburn USA

Following the links from the UK climbing site. Really like the way the roads get picked out at night by the head and tail lights. Gives the landscape a new dimension.

3rd July 2007

Paula Chuter-Baker @ Midhurst, West Sussex

I spend alot of time looking at websites and reading books etc about the Lake District but these photos give a new dimension. What a wonderful idea and they are truely inspirational. We shall definately go and see the exhibition and maybe change the time of the occasional fell walk to get the real feel of your pictures.

Excellent work-it would make a great book!

30th April 2007

felicity mackenzie @ lincoln

A truly haunting selection of images, beautifully executed and sensitively created they serve as a fine dedication to the beauty of the land. Enlaced with a strong pantheistic element they remind of being from and of returning to the earth. Wonderfully evocative stuff, look forward greatly to seeing more!

4th March 2007

Jane Cushnie @ South Lakeland

Keep them coming.

28th January 2007

ANDREW FORSYTH @ KENDAL

A wonderful idea and just the sort of 'WOW!!' project which should help to show how the tranquillity of this amazing place can be destroyed by thoughtless and selfish people spilling light everywhere. Some wicked images already...and more to come!

24th January 2007

David Harrison @ Garstang

Great concept and great images, looking forward to other pictures as the project develops.

Fantastic! Never seen the Lakes at night despite living there for 20 years!! The sharp contrast of the lights against the almost surreal lakes backdrop is really impressive.

Good stuff.

16th January 2007

David Malcolm @ London

Henry - truly fantastic shots - well worth the wait to create them and worth the wait to see them on line as well. A different perspective on landscape photography which I havent really seen before - excellent!

16th January 2007

Mike Gillespie @ Earth

Amazing. What a great idea. I love them (Borrowdale and Derwent Water is a particular favourite). Never seen anything like these - beautiful, other-worldly, peaceful. Top stuff. A little reminder to us what we're doing to our planet too - such a remote part of the country still decorated by the fairy lights of our towns and citys. Careful humans......

15th January 2007

Phil Leigh @ Lancaster

11th January 2007

David Logan @ Whitehaven

Hey Henry,

I'm loving the shots, they look fantastic!

I've never seen anything quite like it. It's great to see pictures of The Lakes like this taken at night-time, the absence of any daylight makes them look somewhat surreal. Also, loving the effects of light pollution from some of the houses / villages and the motion blur on the stars!

Good work, I've subscribed to the RSS feed and eagerly await more shots. Lets hope you get the weather!
